Manager, Engineering

 

The Manager, Engineering provides formal, industry best practices, and leadership of the Data Engineering initiatives at AAIS.  This includes formal subject matter expertise in data analytics including data warehouse architectures, business intelligence tools, “data science” processes, etc.  This is a hands-on leadership position with project and staff management responsibilities.

 

Purpose:

The Manager, Engineering provides the team and thought leadership for AAIS Data Solutions and the overall Data Resource Center.  This role is a “generalist” role that requires a broad knowledge of Data Engineering practices including Cloud architectures, Data Warehouse architectures, data integration approaches and technologies, and Business Intelligence tools, approaches, and products.

This role also requires strong project management skills and background, preferably following an Agile approach to software development.  Being able to organize projects, manage internal and external resources, track project status, manage risk, and communicate to upper management are critical skills.

Finally, this role requires people management and supervisory skills as the Data Engineering practice grows at AAIS. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide overall technical project management and leadership for formal and informal teams around data engineering and data governance.
  • Provide leadership and mentor the Data Engineering team.
  • Define, organize, and manage projects under the direction of the VP of Data Solutions.
  • Design, develop and implement scalable solutions
  • Maintain a working knowledge of data warehouse, data lakes and business intelligence best practices and products.  Drive analysis, selection, and implementation of appropriate tools and techniques for Data Engineering.
  • Collaborate with internal and external software developers, business analyst, etc. to define and help construct data analytics solutions including Data Warehouse, Data Lakes, Data Integration, Reports, Analytics, Business Intelligence front-ends, and Dashboards.
  • Clearly communicate products and projects with simple language and innovative visualizations to management and executives.
  • Provide thought leadership in data management strategies, governance, and design.
  • Drive the innovation and advancement of big data practice at AAIS.
  • Accountability for all data warehouse development, schedules and deliverables
  • Plan and schedule computing, research and reporting activities in order to meet established timetables and objectives.
  • Collaborate with internal and external software developers, business analyst, etc. to plan and construct data analytics solutions including Data Warehouse, ETL, Reports, Analytics, Business Intelligence front-ends, and Dashboards.
  • Acquire any specialized domain knowledge required to be more effective in all required activities.

 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to quickly become an expert on AAIS’s data engineering practice and current state. 
  • Operational knowledge of data modeling and date warehousing.
  • Experience with various business intelligence tools and concepts to transform raw data into useful information. 
  • Strong systems skills with ability to configure and maintain AWS and Hadoop infrastructure.
  • Extensive hands on experience working with large structured and unstructured data sets, including statistical analyses, data visualization, data mining, and data cleansing/transformation.
  • Experience prototyping and developing data warehouse solutions including defining data warehouse architectures, data integration solutions, and business intelligence tools.
  • Entrepreneurial inclination to discover novel opportunities for applying analytical techniques to business/ problems across the insurance industry.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; must be capable of fully yet concisely articulating technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Follows structured methodologies, modeling and governance principles
  • Strong collaboration and mentoring skills.
  • The ability to manage multiple project, teams, and priorities in parallel.  Deadline focused project manager, working with users, managers, external staff and team members to meet organizational goals, deadlines, and priorities.
  • Problem Solving/Critical Thinking skills: making the best decisions possible given the data quality and time available.
  • Strong analytical thinking and ability to quickly pick up new methods, tools and domain expertise.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; must be capable of fully yet concisely articulating technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

 

Requirements:

  • BS in Business, Math, Computer Science or other data analysis discipline with 5+ years of data warehousing and analytics experience.
  • 3+ years of experience managing teams with direct supervision of staff
  • Proven project management experience, delivering technology and business intelligence solutions following industry standard methodologies (Agile preferred, PMP optional)
  • Significant exposure to, ongoing education and training in, and hands-on experience with Data Science concepts and practice including analytic methods and tools.
  • Knowledge of BI best practices and a proven track record of delivering dynamic and powerful solutions.
  • Experience following structured software development methodologies – Agile approaches preferred.
  • Academic or industry experience with complex data solutions.
  • Software programming experience and training on one or more Data Integration tools/languages and various Business Intelligence/Data Mining/Presentation Layer tools (reports, statistical analysis, dashboards, etc.).
  • Systems engineering experience; specifically, Linux, networking, and big data technologies.
