Director, Business Intelligence
Purpose:
The Director, Business Intelligence provides strategy, direction and management of AAIS’s business intelligence infrastructure and business applications. The BI team is the primary liaison between business stakeholders and technical teams for business process design, enterprise applications, business intelligence reporting and product filing operations. In addition, the BI team provides technology support for all network operations, hosted servers, desktop tools, security monitoring and response, asset management and business continuity.
Planning:
- Develop and implement, plan, objective and roadmaps for BI services and products.
- Works collaboratively with AAIS product development teams, actuarial services, data engineering and application development teams to develop a data acquisition and delivery strategy that is based upon market research, emerging trends, internal product development needs and customer needs for use and delivery.
Manage Operations:
Business Systems Management
- Supervise and develop the BI team.
- the implementation and operation of new information systems using agile practices, systems stewardship, and data governance and policies for internal systems that in some cases may be used by our members.
Business Information Management Systems
- Work collaboratively with Data Engineering and provide leadership in the development and maintenance of the AAIS Regulatory Reporting Data Model using the IBM Insurance Information Warehouse.
Systems management
- The director coordinates quarterly reviews of technical assets, annual desktop audits and annual SOC II audits. The director is responsible for business continuity planning and coordination for all infrastructure and business information systems.
SME/Technical Expertise:
Works collaboratively with AAIS Data Engineering and application development teams to define the architecture, application frameworks, data governance and operations for all applications using enterprise data.
- Provides guidance and mentoring to AAIS staff in the development of business information systems, data management, reporting and data governance. Provides leadership to all staff in the development of self-sufficient use of business information systems.
- Communicates the technical strategy for the AAIS clause library and must work collaboratively with the Communications department to write or curate articles and send out periodic updates through online campaigns.
- Monitors data delivery and use, data quality audits, and any contractual reporting and financial payments under all agreements.
- Understands the technological infrastructure required to acquire, manage and deliver data products and work collaboratively with Data Engineering and other technology teams to ensure all data is managed according to best practices, is secure and meets NAIC audit requirements.
Leadership:
Provides leadership and guidance, directly overseeing all business information applications and reporting including financial and human resource hosted services.
Provides leadership and guidance to the systems management teams in the technical management and support of a 100% remote working organization with over 90% of services managed in the cloud.
Industry Facing:
- Represent AAIS to the external actuarial community.
- Oversee and participate in events and conferences as needed.
- Engages with industry partners, maintains relationships.
Governance:
Chairs the Business Systems Governance Committee and serves as the co-chair of the Data Governance Committee. Stewardship and governance responsibilities include clause library architecture and management; security systems operations, reporting and response plans; architecture and data management for enterprise wide applications that require collaboration with multiple technology teams.

Budget:
- Manage department staffing needs (e.g. interviewing, hiring, new hire and ongoing training, annual evaluations, etc.)
- Participate in budget development and monitoring of expenses.
- Make recommendations for software additions or deletions from the suite of offerings
Stewardship:
Stewards online applications used by actuarial products including systems, applications, service and content.
Industry Facing
Attends industry conferences and develops relationships with industry data and solution providers, speaks at conferences and participates in customer visits with AAIS Product Vice Presidents.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Strong technical background and knowledge in information technology, business information systems and networked applications. Knowledge of leading data management technology platforms, master data management and reporting tools such as Tableau and Cognos.
In addition to managing and motiving staff, ensure systems and staff are effective and functioning within budgeted limits, time and specifications based on requirements, with strong focus on internal and external customer service.
Strong track record of leadership, especially overseeing and developing people and teams with a servant leadership approach. Demonstrated success in collaborative style decision making, mentoring and coaching team members for professional growth. Ability to work under pressure, sometimes with competing deadlines
Have an understanding of data and information systems management, security, controls, reporting and audits. A commitment to ownership and accountability of systems to ensure the successful outcome of SOC II and regulatory audits of information systems.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Math, Statistics
10+ Years of experience in BI
