ALABAMA AND IOWA LATEST STATES
TO REQUIRE FILINGS VIA SERFF

Insurance departments in Alabama and Iowa are the latest to require insurers to submit filings electronically using the System for Electronic Rate and Form Filing (SERFF).

In Iowa, a new regulation specifies that filings must be made using SERFF as of May 2, 2007. In Alabama, a bulletin sets the date for mandatory SERFF filings at Nov. 1, 2007.

AAIS is an authorized third-party provider of SERFF filing service, and companies can utilize AAIS for custom filings of most products, whether or not they are based on AAIS programs. For information, contact compliance@AAISonline.com.

MICHIGAN  REQUIRES INDIVIDUAL FILING
OF 'DISCRETIONARY CLAUSES'

The Michigan Office of Financial and Insurance Services (OFIS) is requiring that all companies make filings certifying whether they include "discretionary clauses" in their policies.

Discretionary clauses, which are defined in an OFIS regulation, restrict a policyholder's ability to appeal a claim decision. AAIS has no such provisions in its policy forms, and OFIS is requiring that companies respond individually. Sample filing letters are provided in a notice from OFIS.

Originally, the filing was to be made by April 1 but, due to the late announcement of the requirement, OFIS is granting 60-day extensions for compliance.

AAIS CONSTRUCTION CLASSES
PART OF NEW CCIS CURRICULUM

AAIS forms have been chosen as the standards used to teach the inland marine segment of a new insurance designation: Certified Construction Insurance Specialist (CCIS).

Forms found in the Builders Risk, Contractors Equipment, and Installation Floater sections of the AAIS Inland Marine Guide will be covered in part one of the CCIS curriculum in the upcoming Contractors & Builders Conferences being held in five locations. The Guide is the leading industry resource for forms, rating procedures, underwriting guidelines, and other information for the nonfiled classes of inland marine insurance.

The inland marine segment will be taught by Marjorie Segale, vice president of the Insurance Skills Center, Huntington Beach, Calif., the sponsor of the conferences. AAIS has been a co-sponsor of the center's Agribusiness Conference, and AAIS materials are used in the curriculum for the center's Agribusiness and Farm Insurance Specialist designation.
