WHEATON, Ill., Feb. 2, 2005—Pennsylvania insurance commissioner Diane Koken, current president of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), will be the keynote speaker at the 2005 Annual Conference of the American Association of Insurance Services (AAIS).

The event is scheduled for April 10-12 at the L'Auberge Resort and Spa, Del Mar., Cal.

Koken, who was elected NAIC president in September 2004, will update conference attendees on the status of regulatory issues facing insurers at the state and federal level.

Following Koken's review, two industry experts will assess the impact of proposed regulatory changes in a session entitled "Insurance Deregulation: How will regulatory reform affect competition?" The session features Joan Lamm-Tennant, president of Gen Re Capital Consultants, and Therese Vaughan, a Drake University professor and former insurance commissioner of Iowa.

Other conference sessions include:

  • "Crisis Leadership: Maintaining operations, communications, and morale," featuring Steven Fink, veteran of the Three Mile Island crisis and author of a seminal book on crisis management;

  •  "Predicting the Unpredictable: Measuring and Managing Catastrophe Exposures," featuring Paul VanderMarck, executive vice president of RMS, Inc.; Dr. Peter Hoppe, a geo-scientist with Munich Re; and attorney Ron Robinson, who is involved in terrorism issues;

  • "Strategic Underwriting: Positioning for success," featuring Deborah Smallwood of the Tower Group drawing on that firm's study of property/casualty underwriting strategies; and

  • "Engaging Employees: The factors that affect performance," featuring Towers Perrin consultant Jean Chiang drawing on that firm's global survey of the factors that make employees more productive.

AAIS is a national advisory organization that develops policy forms and manuals used by more than 600 property/casualty insurers. The AAIS Annual Conference addresses topics of interest to senior executives and managers, and is open to professionals from throughout the industry.
