The AAIS Golf Outing
The Lagoon Course at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club
Participants
in this year's golf outing won't have to travel far. The event takes
place onsite at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club at The Lagoon Course,
a 6,022 par-70 masterpiece. This course, restored in 2007, features
new tees, fairways and greens, new turf standards, improved irrigation
and drainage, and a greatly enhanced landscaping theme.
The course places a premium
on accurate drives and thoughtful approaches. Water
is the dominant feature with a mosaic of lakes and lagoons threatening
golfers on eleven holes. Tall pines, palms, and ancient, sprawling oaks
form the contours of this lushly landscaped course. Fairways are narrow
and kept in immaculate condition, and the greens are small and fast.
Our 12:15 p.m. shotgun
start will give participants plenty of time to complete
a full round and relax before rejoining our full group at our Monday
evening reception.
Attendees
who are not participating in the golf outing have the option of spending
time on their own, or joining others for a cruise aboard the schooner
Freedom, a replica of a 19th century blockade runner.
Freedom is a
72', double masted,
gaff-rigged, topsail schooner built in Norfolk, Va. in 1982 by famed
naval architect Merritt Walters, the first of his many Rover schooners.
Freedom was the first sailing tour boat to be certified by the Coast
Guard to carry passengers to hire.
Participants on the cruise
will depart from conference hotel by bus at noon and return at approximately
4 p.m. Lunch will be provided, and the cruise itself will run from approximately
1-3 p.m. Registration is limited to 32 people.
A bus will depart our conference hotel at 9 a.m. for an entertaining guest/spouse tour through history and culture.
A professional tour guide will lead the group through downtown Jacksonville and tell of the exploits of Andrew Jackson, and of the famous architects that descended upon the city after the Great Fire of 1901.
Our
first stop will be the Merrill House, where we go back to 1903 to see
how people lived when Jacksonville was the most modern city in the world.
We drive past Jacksonville's unique Memorial Wall and the sports complex
where you will hear the city's own version of Bull Durham. We stop outside
the Florida Theatre to elaborate on the “"first Hollywood"
before the “"talkies".
For lunch our group will
dine at Alfred duPont's former home, now the Epping Forest Yacht Club,
one of the South’s grandest estates. This special place has been
the site of summit meetings between world leaders, and an oasis for
visiting heads of state, political leaders, and captains of American
industry. Situated in gardens of beauty and grace, it overlooks a spectacular
view of the St. Johns River.
Epping Forest
The bus returns to the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club at 2:30 p.m
Beach
Party closing event
Break out the shorts and the flip-flops for our closing reception and dinner.
In addition to food and drink, our evening will feature horseshoes, volleyball, music and dancing, along with a classic beach bonfire just beyond the Surf Club patio.
