Our Role in Insurance

Products and people you can rely on

Edmund J. Kelly, president and CEO

"From my years in insurance and reinsurance, I understand the importance of having product lines that are up-to-date, flexible, easy to automate, and allow for precise risk selection and rating.

"I was attracted to AAIS because it focuses exclusively on product development for its member companies, and fills a critical need for competitive choice in product resources. All of our revenue--100%--is devoted to the maintenance of quality programs used by more than 700 insurers throughout the U.S.

"Those programs encompass more than 25 lines of personal, commercial, agricultural, and inland marine insurance, described in detail under the 'Products' menu of this website. On numerous occasions, AAIS has been the first advisory organization to make important innovations available to the industry--most recently its Homeowners By-Peril Rating Plan.

"The foundation of our stable growth is the expanding body of data we are acquiring from insurers and from public and private sources outside of our industry.  The 'Services' menu describes the range of statistical, compliance, and other AAIS support services. These include tools more and more companies are using to contribute data to AAIS that not only supports their operations but helps support a competitive industry.

"It is only through the efforts of the entire AAIS team that I find myself in a position to lead an organization with a reputation for stable growth, effective expense control, sound finances, and a very promising future.

"As you review the content on this website, you'll find--as I have frequently and consistently heard from our member companies since I joined the AAIS team--the AAIS truly provides products and people you can rely on."

Edmund J. Kelly has many years of executive experience in insurance organizations that managed the development of product platforms for property and liability lines.

Among other things, Kelly served seven years as president and COO of ICAT Holdings LLC, an organization that developed one of the first programs for allowing private insurers to write wind-only coverage in the voluntary, non-residual market.

He was also an executive for a specialty division of Royal Sun Alliance that developed and maintained an industry-leading professional liability program for architects and engineers. He was vice president of operations for a company that was among the first to experiment with "24 hour" integrated coverage for employee health insurance and workers comp coverage.

Prior to his insurance career, Kelly worked 11 years as a senior manager for Ernst & Young; he is a certified public accountant.

The American Association of Insurance Services (AAIS) is a national advisory organization that develops policy forms and rating information used by property/casualty insurers.

Our core purpose is to help companies compete in the marketplace, and we are widely recognized as a valuable product development resource for insurers who need responsive, innovative information services.

More than 700 insurers of all sizes, including some of the largest national carriers, use one or more AAIS programs as the basis of the policies they sell to consumers, businesses, and other organizations.

(AAIS does not sell insurance or provide any service directly to the general public.)

Our Products

AAIS has a long, rich history of service to P/C insurers through its leadership in product innovation and design.

Since it was organized in 1975 as a multiline advisory organization, AAIS has grown significantly, both in the products and services it offers, and in the number of insurers it serves. AAIS currently offers:

  • Programs of forms, manual rules, and rating information for more than 25 lines of personal, commercial, agricultural, and inland marine insurance;
  • Statistical reporting plans for programs we support, plus auto; and
  • Support services for actuarial analysis, automation, custom product development, state filings, and training.

Over the years, our customers have seen how AAIS has led the industry in several key areas:

  • Developing and filing by-peril rating for homeowners insurance;
  • Creating innovative approaches to writing and rating the growing diversity of farm and agricultural risks;
  • Expanding the scope and enhancing the precision of inland marine and output insurance; and
  • Developing new coverages and addressing emerging exposures in property and liability insurance.

Our People

As AAIS has grown, so has our staff, both in number and in the breadth and depth of its expertise.

Today, AAIS employs a diverse group of experienced insurance professionals highly skilled in the exacting disciplines necessary for insurance product development:

  • Actuarial analysis;
  • Policy drafting;
  • Manual development;
  • Regulatory filings,
  • Statistical reporting; and
  • Technical support.

Several AAIS staff members have managed product lines for P/C insurers, and have firsthand experience of the challenges companies face when implementing and maintaining programs.

With their combined decades of expertise, our specialists have made AAIS a recognized leader in insurance product research and design.

Equally important, however, is our commitment to having our staff specialists personally accessible to respond to the inquiries of AAIS customers.

That's why we say that AAIS provides products and people you can rely on.
