Texas Clarifies Policy Delivery Deadlines

June 19, 2015

A new law in Texas requires insurers to deliver personal auto or residential policies to insured's, or to the insurer's agents for delivery to insureds, within the following timeframes:

  • Not later than the 30th day after the policy's effective date if the policy term is more than 30 days;
  • Not later than the 10th day after the effective date if the term is more than 10 days and less than 31 days; or
  • Within the policy period for a policy with a term of 10 days or less.

This bill also requires an insurer to deliver a policy renewed or amended by the insurer to the policyholder  or the insurer's agent not later than the 15th day after the date the insurer or insurer's agent receives a written request for the policy from the policyholder.

The law takes effect Sept. 1, 2015.
