The Illinois Department of Illinois has issued a bulletin saying that insurers are "requested" to follow certain guidelines in dealing with policyholders in two northern counties stricken by severe tornadoes on April 9.
Among the guidelines are:
- A moratorium on cancellations and non-renewals through June 9, 2015;
- Extensions of at least 60 days for time periods within policies for reporting and substantiating claims ;
- Extensions of at least 60 days of time periods for repairing affected properties; and
- Exceptions to policy or contract requirements when they cannot be met due to the disaster.
Also, insurers are "directed to refrain" from cancelling or non-renewing insurance policies on affected properties due to location and increase in risk.
The bulletin calls on insurers to post information on their websites about their efforts to comply with the guidelines, and to advise consumers that they can contact the department with complaints.
